Martial Arts are codified systems and traditions of combat practises, which are performed for a variety of reasons: self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness as well as mental, physical and spiritual development. Through practise in the Martial Arts a person’s physical fitness, strength, stamina, flexibility and movement coordination will improve as the whole body is exercised and the entire muscular system is activated. Beyond contributing to physical fitness, martial arts training also benefits mental health, contributing to self-esteem and self-control as well as emotional and spiritual well-being. The term Martial Arts originates from reference to the Roman God of War, Mars and so calls to mind all the skills and knowledge needed for war.
